NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF COLOMBIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Juan Jose Quintana, the new Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Quintana had been serving in 2013 at the Embassy of Colombia to the Netherlands, in charge of matters concerning the International Court of Justice. He was a Minister in charge of legal affairs at the Permanent Mission of Colombia to the United Nations in New York, as well as a Delegate to the Security Council, from 2011 to 2012. In 2010, he served as an Advisor, Secretariat for Legal Affairs, Organization of American States.

A career diplomat, Mr. Quintana has held various posts, including as Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Colombia in Washington D.C. from 2002 to 2007; Director of the Multilateral Political Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia (2000 to 2002); and Counsellor and Chargé d’Affairs at the Embassy of Colombia in Sofia, Bulgaria (1994 to 1995). He served at the Embassy of Colombia in The Hague two other times as Counsellor from 1995 to 1998 and Second Secretary from 1988 to 1992.

Mr. Quintana has a Master of Laws in Public International Law from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands (1996) and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano (1987). He has lectured on Public International Law at the Universidad Sergio Arboleda and the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota as well as the San Carlos Academy for Diplomats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also published a number of books and many articles.
