NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PORTUGAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Pedro Nuno De Abreu e Melo Bártolo, the new Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo was the Ambassador of Portugal to Russia, posted in Moscow from 2009 to 2013, where he was also accredited as non-resident Ambassador to Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. From 2007 to 2008 Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Portugal to the European Union, with the rank of Ambassador. He was also the Chairperson of the Committee of Permanent Representatives during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.

Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo served as Portugal’s Ambassador to Israel, in Tel Aviv, between 2003 and 2006. He was the Head of Cabinet of the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Lisbon from 2002 to 2003, prior to which he was the Director of the Directorate-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry. Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo was posted on secondment to the European Union in Brussels from 1997 to 2001, as a Director for Africa, Asia, Latin America and Commonwealth of Independent States countries within the Directorate-General for External Relations at the European Union Council Secretariat.

A career diplomat, Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983. He undertook his first overseas posting in 1987, as Counsellor at the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Communities in Brussels. Between the years of 1993 and 1994 he was seconded to the European Commission in Brussels as a national expert on the issue of European Union enlargement negotiations. Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo held the position of Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1994 to 1995. He served as both the Director for European Union Common Foreign and Security Policy, and the Head of the European Correspondent’s Bureau, in Lisbon, from 1995 to 1997.

Mr. De Abreu e Melo Bártolo was born in Lisbon and holds a law degree from the University of Lisbon.
