NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF ANGOLA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Jorge Correia, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations Office at Geneva, presented his credentials today to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Correia had been the Ambassador of Angola to Switzerland, an appointment he had held since 2005. From 2000 to 2005 he was the Angolan Ambassador to Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauretania. Mr. Correia was an Ambassador for his country from 1994 to 2000. In 1994 he served as Director of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Relations in Angola. From 1990 to 1994 Mr. Correia conducted a tour of duty in New York, as an advisor at the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations. From 1987 to 1990 he was posted to the Angolan Embassy to Yugoslavia and Romania. He first joined the Angolan Ministry of External Affairs in 1978, as a technical advisor, and became a diplomat at the same Ministry in 1984.

Prior to starting his career as a diplomat, Mr. Correia had worked as the Cabinet Director at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs for the Transitional Government of Angola from 1975 to 1977. During that time he also worked as a Member of the Commission of Social Communication. In 1977 Mr. Correia became a member of the Cabinet of Studies and Documentation at the Ministry of Justice in Angola.

Mr. Correia has a PhD in International Relations from University 17 November in Prague, Czech Republic, from where he graduated in 1973. His thesis was titled ‘The International Protection of Human Rights and the Portuguese Colonialism in Angola’. In 1974 Mr. Correia studied at the Graduate Institute Geneva, working on a paper titled ‘Causes and Effects of the Single Party in Africa’. In 1982 he was an auditor at The Hague Vocational Academy of International Law. In 1984 he completed another PhD at Universitas Carolina Pragensis in the Czech Republic, Prague, where his thesis was titled ‘The Angolan Revolution from the Perspective of International Law’.

Mr. Correia was born on 13 March 1945 in Kalandula, Malange, Angola. He is married with three children.
