NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BAHRAIN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Yusuf Abdulkarim Bucheeri, the new Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Dr. Bucheeri was a Director (rank of Ambassador) in the Legal Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, a position he had held since 2002. From 1999 to 2002 he served as Second Secretary at the Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. From 1994 to 1999, Dr. Bucheeri was the Third Secretary in the Legal Department, which was where he began his diplomatic career.
Dr. Bucheeri represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at The Shura Council and the House of Representatives in the meetings of two committees on foreign affairs, defence, and national security, in both houses of parliament, from 2002 to 2006. There he worked on legislation which included Conventions against international terrorism and the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocols. Dr. Bucheeri has served as a member of Bahrain’s delegation to several summits and committee meetings of the League of Arab States, including the Standing Committee on Human Rights of the Arab League and the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs of the Arab League. Between 2003 and 2005 Dr. Bucheeri was a member of various committees, including the Committee of Experts on the legal study of international conventions on combating international terrorism and the Development Committee for the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council at the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States.
Dr. Bucheeri has also worked with several international organizations: he served as Head of Bahrain’s delegation at the annual meeting of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at The Hague in 2004, and as Chairman of the Delegation to the 43rd Session of the Asia-Africa Advisory Organization of the Law. In the field of Human Rights Dr. Bucheeri has been a Member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Human Rights Committee since 2002, supervising the preparation and drafting of reports and participating in discussions before the Committee under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the International Convention against Torture and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
Dr. Bucheeri holds a Doctorate in Public International Law from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (2002), a Master’s Degree in Public International Law also from the University of Edinburgh (1999) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, with honours, from King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1994).
Dr. Bucheeri was born on 3 February 1971 in Al Mubarraq, Bahrain and is married.
