NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TUNISIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Moncef Baati, the new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Baati served as the General Director of International Organizations and Conferences. From 2007 to 2010 he was the Director of the United Nations Organization and International Conferences; from 2005 to 2007 he was the ambassador of Tunisia in Seoul; from 2002 to 2005 he was the Chargé d’Affaires for Tunisia in Stockholm; and from 1998 to 2002 he was the Deputy Director of International Economic Relations.

Mr. Baati served in Geneva before, from 1992 to 1998, when he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Tunisia in Geneva and also from 1982 to 1988 when he served as the First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Tunisia in Geneva. From 1988 to 1992 he was head of the Multilateral Trade Relations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1979 to 1981 he was Secretary of Foreign Affairs for the Ministry of Finance. Mr. Baati began his service in government in 1976 as the Deputy Inspector in the Ministry of Finance and the Court of Auditors.

Mr. Baati is a Knight of the Order of the Republic of Tunisia and has published several articles on international trade, regional integration and other subjects. He serves as the General Secretary of the Tunisian Association of the United Nations and he is a founding member of the Tunisian International Studies Association.

Mr. Baati was born in Sfax, Tunisia and received a degree with merit in private law from the Faculty of Law, Politics, and Economic Sciences of Tunis in 1978. He also attended the Ecole Nationale d’Administration de Tunis, received a certificate of merit from the GATT Trade Policy Course in 1980 and attended the 18th session of the National Defense Institute. He is married with two children.
