NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NIGERIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Umunna Humphrey Orjiako, the new Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Orjiako had been serving as Director of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Abuja since 2009. He was the Director of the Overseas Communication Department at the Ministry in 2008, and in 2007 he was the Director of the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. In 2006, he was the Special Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs on foreign service reforms.

A career diplomat, Mr. Orjiako served at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington as Minister for political affairs from 2003 to 2006. He also served in Brussels from 1993 to 2000 as Minister Counsellor and political/economic officer. Other foreign assignments include Stockholm from 1986 to 1990 and Madrid from 1982 to 1984.

Mr. Orjiako has a Bachelor of Science in political science from the University of Nigeria (1979). He also obtained higher degrees in political science and international affairs from the University of Lagos (1981) and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (1999). He is the author of a number of books.

Mr. Orjiako was born on 28 December 1954 in Ehime-Mbano, Imo State, Nigeria. He is married with four children.
