NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PERU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Fernando Rojas Samanez, the new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei A. Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to coming to Geneva, since 2006, Mr. Rojas Samanez had been serving as Peru’s Ambassador to Bolivia. A career diplomat, the new Permanent Representative has a long history of service abroad, including as Ambassador to Costa Rica, from 2000 to 2004; and as Consul General of Peru in New York, from 1996 to 1998; as well as serving at the Peruvian Embassies in France (1994-1996), Bolivia (1989-1992), Brazil (1982-1985), Belgium, including the European Union (1976-1981) and Luxembourg (1976-1981). Mr. Rojas Samanez also served as Chef de Cabinet of the Permanent Secretary of the Latin American Economic System (SELA) from 1986 to 1989.

The new Permanent Representative has also held a number of important positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, including Secretary for Foreign Policy, from 2005 to 2006; Secretary of Administration, from 2004 to 2005; Director for South American Affairs, from 1998 to 2000; and Media Director, from 1992 to 1994. During the course of his career, Mr. Rojas Samanez has participated in the United Nations General Assembly, the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, presidential summits of the Rio Group, Latin American summits, the South American Community of Nations and the Andean Community, among others.

Born on 24 June 1948 in Arequipa, Mr. Rojas Samanez received a degree in international relations and professional diplomacy from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru in 1974. He received his undergraduate degree from the National University of San Agustin in Arequipa.
