NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BANGLADESH PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Abdul Hannan, the new Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office at Geneva, including other offices in Geneva and Vienna, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, from October 2006 to July 2009, Mr. Hannan was Ambassador to Oman. Previously, from 2004 to 2006, he had been assigned to Karachi, Pakistan, as Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner.

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hannan served as Director-General and Vice Principal of the Foreign Service Academy from 2002 to 2004. Earlier, he served as Director (Europe) in 1997, and Director (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)) in 1998. In addition, he served as Director in the Prime Minister’s office during 1998 and 1999.

In missions abroad, Mr. Hannan has served as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission in Ottawa, Canada, from 2000 to 2002; as Counsellor in India, in 1995 and 1996; and as First Secretary in Moscow, from 1991 to 1994.

Mr. Hannan obtained a master’s in diplomacy from the University of Lancaster, England, in 1989. He received his bachelor’s with honours in economics in 1977 and a master’s in economics in 1979 from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Born in October 1956, Ambassador Hannan is married with two children.
