In Commemoration of the International Day of la Francophonie

Mesdames et Messieurs :

C’est un grand plaisir de vous accueillir au Palais des Nations pour célébrer la journée internationale de la Francophonie et le centenaire de la naissance de Léopold Sédar Senghor. J’aimerais remercier l’Ambassadeur (Roger Julien Menga) de la République du Congo, l’Ambassadeur (Ousmane Camara) de la République de Sénégal et l’Ambassadeur (Libère Bararunyeretse) de l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie pour leur contribution afin d’organiser cette exposition.

Ladies and Gentlemen :
This exhibition, which traces the life, accomplishments and work of Léopold Sédar Senghor not only portrays his distinguished contribution in service to peace, justice, development and education globally, but is also a fitting reflection of the important efforts of the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF). Indeed, as one of the founding fathers of the OIF, today we pay tribute to his dedication for the promotion cultural diversity, which also personify the values and principles of the Organization, which he held so dear.

The United Nations and OIF share many fundamental values and goals. Indeed, they are both founded on the principles of dialogue, multilateralism and diversity. Like the United Nations, the OIF is composed of a multitude of diverse backgrounds, traditions and convictions. The two Organizations also work towards the achievement of shared objectives for the promotion of democracy, peace, sustainable development and the resolution of conflicts globally. Indeed, the common threats and challenges of our times also call for collective responses and the OIF is an indispensable partner for the United Nations in our efforts to improve the lives of millions of people around the world, regardless of nationality, culture, religion or race. In the words of the Secretary-General, “Our common humanity must triumph over perceived differences. We live in one world.”
