End of the year Reception of the Diplomatic Club

Bonne année et bienvenue à vous tous. C’est un vrai plaisir de recevoir encore une fois cette année au Palais des Nations la réception du nouvel an du Club Diplomatique. Nous sommes vraiment ravis de continuer cette tradition.

J’aimerais saisir cette occasion pour remercier le Club Diplomatique et la Fondation pour Genève de leur soutien indéfectible au travail de la Genève Internationale. Un merci particulier à Ivan Pictet, Luzius Wasecha et Tatjana Darany ainsi qu’à votre équipe pour l’excellente coopération. Grâce à vous, les différents acteurs de la Genève Internationale se rassemblent et mettent la lumière sur le travail effectué ici. Votre créativité et votre engagement vous honorent et nous aident énormément. Cette année, la Genève Internationale va prendre la route, comme on vient de l’entendre, et se rendre dans plus de 40 villes différentes en Suisse, dans le but de promouvoir l’impact de l’effort collectif. Encore une fois, merci pour tout ce que vous entreprenez pour la Genève Internationale.

Le travail effectué ici au Palais des Nations et au sein de la Genève Internationale change la vie de tout un chacun. En travaillant ensemble, nous avons ainsi progressé dans le changement de perception de ces efforts. Sa valeur et son impact sur tous est de mieux en mieux compris. C’est l'une de mes priorités de progresser dans ce sens dans l’année qui vient.

For many, the start of the New Year is an opportunity to turn the page, to start afresh and to chart a new course. For the United Nations, the year 2015 represents exactly such an opportunity to open a new chapter, to set new goals and to take our work forward in a different way. We will celebrate our 70th anniversary. And we will set far-reaching new policy agendas on development and its financing, on climate change and on disaster risk reduction. A tall order – there can be no doubt about that – but also a tremendous opportunity to make a difference for generations to come. 2015 will truly be a defining year for all of us.

In all of these efforts, International Geneva will play an absolutely central role. Not just in the expertise that we feed into developing these policies, but very much in their implementation. When a new vision has been agreed, this is where it will become reality for people across the planet.

Openness is essential when you create something new and you want to make real progress. Openness to a critical look at how you are doing business already. Openness to new ideas. And openness to different points of view.

At a time when challenges in the world may make many turn inwards, and turn away from what may seem new or different, we need this openness more than ever. I am committed to openness on the part of the United Nations in Geneva, and I hope to be able to open up further in the year ahead – as part of our 70th anniversary and beyond with due consideration, of course, to the operating environment. Not just a greater opening of the Palais des Nations, but also a continuing opening to new partnerships and new ways of doing our work so we can respond more effectively to the challenges ahead. And I look forward to doing so with all of you.

So, in a spirit of openness and inclusion, I wish you again a happy New Year to all of you. And all good wishes for good health and much happiness in the year ahead.
