Excellencies
Ladies and gentlemen:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this Azerbaijani Cultural Night and concert. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan for continuing its tradition of active participation in the Cultural Activities Programme of UNOG. I am especially pleased to welcome the return of Mugham music to the Palais des Nations. These activities greatly contribute to the promotion of cross-cultural dialogue and understanding at UNOG and I personally welcome them. After all, promotion and dialogue among cultures is crucial to fulfilling the central objectives of the United Nations Charter, upholding human rights and advancing development.

Tonight, we are able to experience first-hand the rich and vibrant heritage of Azerbaijan. Well known for its historic sites, such as its Walled City of Baku, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ancient temples and Gobustun rock art dating back no less than 40,000 years, it is clear that Azerbaijani culture is not only important to the country and the region, but also to the world.

And it is not material representations alone that are valued by the international community. Also recognized as an ‘intangible cultural heritage of humanity’ by UNESCO, is the vibrant Mugham music we are about to hear this evening. This traditional music form, a classical and academic art, reflects different periods of the country’s history. In addition, by showcasing a number of regional cultural and artistic influences, it is a literal embodiment of cross-cultural harmony.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

As we enjoy this illustrative and vibrant music from Azerbaijan, let us all recognize the importance of preserving and promoting cultural heritage. I am sure this evening will inspire us all.

Thank you very much and enjoy the concert.
