Launch of Year of Polar Prediction
This is a coordinated international drive to improve predictions of weather, climate and ice conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic in the face of rapid climate change. The aim of the campaign is to minimize the environmental risks associated with increased activity in polar regions and to close the current gaps in polar forecasting capacity.
Thomas Jung, Chair of the Polar Prediction Project steering committee, and professor at the Alfred Wegener Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research Celeste Saolo, Head of Argentina’s national meteorological service (Antarctic) Paolo Ruti, Chief of WMO’s World Weather Research Programme
