International Women’s Day

Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is my pleasure to join you today for this commemoration of International Women’s Day. I would like to express my appreciation to the Group of Women Ambassadors for the initiative to mark, what is not just an important observance for the United Nations, but for us all.

There have been achievements made since the Beijing Women’s Summit 20 years ago and the Millennium Summit in 2000. More women are working. More girls are in school. Fewer women die in pregnancy and childbirth. And more women are in leadership positions.

But progress has been slow and uneven. It is a sad reality that no matter where in the world a baby girl is born today, she will face inequality and discrimination. And as she grows up, if she is prevented from realizing her full potential, the effects will not be felt by her alone – they will impact us all.

Because full equality for women means healthier societies for the world. Their equal participation in the workforce means increased economic growth. Their equal access to quality education means stronger families, communities and democracies. And their equal representation in leadership positions builds a more just, peaceful and secure world.

On International Women’s Day and every day, the United Nations will work to advance human rights, women’s empowerment and gender equality. And on International Women’s Day and every day, we will commit to doing this together – men, women, young people, governments and civil society.

Because equality for women is progress for all.
