Opening Ceremony of Ferney-Voltaire Model United Nations

Chers collègues,
Chers délégués,

C'est un vrai plaisir d'être ici avec vous cet après-midi. J'apprécie réellement l'occasion de pouvoir prendre part à l'ouverture de votre conférence MUN, ou comme l’appellation officielle la désigne, «L'ONU mise en scène». Je suis impressionné par le sérieux et l'engagement avec lesquels vous avez organisé cet événement.

Depuis soixante ans, les « Model United Nations » permettent l'implication des jeunes dans les questions d'actualité et la sensibilisation au monde qui les entoure. Au fil des décennies, ces conférences se sont développées et ont pris de l'ampleur: plus de 400 sont organisées dans le monde chaque année et dans ce processus, les élèves discutent et débatent, apprennent à faire des compromis, rédigent des résolutions, tout en faisant de nouveaux amis, en tissant des réseaux et en apprenant à connaître les différentes cultures.

Il est particulièrement remarquable que la Conférence de Ferney-Voltaire de cette année, la FERMUN, rassemble près de 600 étudiants et enseignants d'écoles du Moyen-Orient et d'Afrique du Nord, d'Asie du Sud-Est, d'Europe et des Caraïbes. Les élèves du Lycée de Ferney-Voltaire, organisateur de cette manifestation, proviennent de plus de 80 pays différents - un nombre impressionnant ! - et tiennent leurs réunions à la fois en anglais et en français. Vous appliquez ainsi réellement les principes du multiculturalisme, du multilinguisme et du respect de la diversité. Ces principes sont aussi les valeurs fondamentales des Nations Unies, que nos collaborateurs doivent chérir et défendre dans le monde entier.

Being engaged in Model United Nations in your schools back home and now here at FerMUN increases your understanding of the often complex ways in which the United Nations system operates. Many of you may decide to join the United Nations one day. The knowledge of the system and the practical skills that you develop through MUN will definitely serve you well then. You will also bring with you fresh perspectives and ideas on where – and how – things can be changed and improved. And we can all agree that there are many areas where thinking outside of the box is much needed! And very much so in the area that you will be dealing with – climate change.

By choosing such a current, complex theme you have already demonstrated your readiness to take on difficult issues and your willingness to dig into subjects which are currently at the top of the international agenda. In fact, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has called climate change the “defining issue of our time”.

Less than two months ago, the world’s attention was on Warsaw, where the UN Climate Change Conference took place, leading to an agreement that all States would start to work towards cutting emissions as soon as possible. This year, in September, the Secretary-General will convene a Climate Summit in New York, bringing together Heads of State and Government along with business, finance, civil society and local leaders. The goal of the Summit will be to catalyze actions by this wide array of actors, produce new commitments and contributions, which, all together, should help the world shift toward a low-carbon economy. In your sessions over the next three days, you will address multiple aspects of this immense challenge that our planet is facing.

I want to thank you once again for being here today. I hope that you will have an exciting and productive time here in Geneva. I encourage you to continue to learn about and support the work of the United Nations, and to keep an open mind. Your generation will take UN principles, values, and commitments forward, and the time for that will come sooner than you think!
