New Year's Reception of Diplomatic Club of Geneva

Chers amis,

C’est un très grand plaisir pour moi que nous nous retrouvions ce soir au Palais des Nations pour la réception du nouvel an du Club diplomatique de Genève et je souhaite à chacune et chacun d’entre vous la bienvenue ainsi qu’une excellente année 2014 ! Qu’elle apporte à tous bonheur, santé, paix et sécurité !

Le Palais des Nations est un lieu chargé d’histoire…mais surtout un lieu qui a fait et continue de faire l’histoire ! Nous avons encore pu le voir le week-end dernier car c’est ici que s’est déroulée la première rencontre directe entre une délégation du gouvernement syrien et une délégation de l’opposition syrienne.

La vie de millions de personnes est impactée, directement ou indirectement, par les décisions qui se prennent chaque jour ici à Genève, qu’elles soient d’ordre politique, économique, ou humanitaire.

Genève est la ville internationale par excellence où tout se discute et où tous se rencontrent, et la réception de ce soir en est une parfaite illustration. Nous sommes en effet réunis aujourd’hui grâce au Club diplomatique de Genève qui joue un rôle crucial dans la Genève internationale, un rôle fédérateur. Le Club diplomatique nous rapproche et favorise la création de synergies entre les acteurs de la Genève internationale. Ces synergies nous permettent d’aller toujours plus loin et je saisis cette occasion pour remercier le Président du Club diplomatique et son équipe pour le travail formidable qu’ils accomplissent.

To go always further in helping people, is what we try to achieve every day. Too often, however, people do not realize that the decisions taken at the United Nations impact them directly. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, for instance, has over the years designed and updated the international legal architecture for road safety, which has saved millions of lives. Thanks to the Tobacco control measures set up by the World Health Organization and put in place in 41 countries between 2007 and 2010, it is estimated that some 7.4 million premature deaths would be prevented by 2050. These are but two of a multitude of examples generated daily here in Geneva that affect individuals in every corner of our planet.

Everyone needs to be more aware of what we do at the United Nations, and particularly what we do in Geneva. With your help and support, I am convinced that we can, within a short time span, change the perception of International Geneva and, by doing so, create increased support of governments, and the public at large, for the unique multilateral hub that is Geneva, and my colleagues look forward to working with you on that. Just as we look forward to draw on your support for ambitious renovation of these buildings that we are starting this year. It is a huge and much needed project that will take up to 10 years to complete and be quite expensive. But it will be worth the effort – this is after all not only the physical manifestation and symbol of International Geneva but also very much part of the national historical heritage of Geneva and of Switzerland.

During this reception, you will hear some wonderful background music played by the United Nations Jazz Club and I could not conclude my speech without expressing to them my gratitude for being here and sharing their talent.
