Chers Etudiants :

C’est pour moi un très grand honneur d’être parmi vous aujourd’hui pour cette cérémonie prestigieuse et émouvante.

Je souhaiterais exprimer ma plus sincère gratitude à l’Université de Genève pour avoir choisi de décerner cette année la Médaille de l’Université à l’Office des Nations Unies à Genève. C’est une remarquable distinction qui est accordée à notre Organisation.

Cette médaille – cette reconnaissance suprême – met en avant la volonté de notre Organisation de contribuer à la vie universitaire, et cela dès les premiers pas de la Société des Nations. Elle souligne aussi l’excellente relation qui existe entre l’Office des Nations Unies à Genève et l’Université de Genève. Pour nous, l’Université de Genève est un partenaire clé. Comme nous, elle œuvre sans relâche pour construire un monde meilleur, plus juste.

Le laudatio prononcé par le Vice-Recteur m’a beaucoup ému car il a retracé l’histoire commune de nos entités. La remise de la Médaille de l’Université est décrite comme un témoignage d’amitié. Eh bien ! je tiens à dire au Vice-Recteur – à vous dire à tous – que cette amitié est indéfectible.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is clear that the rich academic and research community in Geneva is an asset for the United Nations. It brings nuance and depth to our discussions. It provides fresh ideas and innovation that contribute to real solutions to today’s complex challenges. The research and academic capacities here form an indispensable part of what makes Geneva a unique multilateral hub. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Switzerland’s membership of the United Nations, I take this opportunity to thank our Host Country for the strong support for this valuable aspect of “International Geneva”.
This year, we also mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau – another influential representative of the intellectual strengths of Geneva. As we heard from the High Commissioner for Human Rights and as I would like to remind you, Rousseau famously wrote that “everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are grown is given to us by education”. This captures the essence and importance of learning.

These historic landmarks frame today’s event and the award of the University Medal to the United Nations - a symbol of our shared belief in the power of education and its essential role.

I am committed to continuing our cooperation to enable the outstanding education and research in Geneva to serve the human family.

This precious award, from such a prestigious institution as the University of Geneva, will be displayed in one of the prominent places at the Palais des Nations as a symbol of our productive partnership. It will be a source of great pride for us in the United Nations. You may rely on us to be continuously committed to working closely together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation.
