Press Release

The President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, issued the following statement today on the announcement by the United States to run for election to the Human Rights Council.

“I am very encouraged by the news of the decision of the U.S. to run for a seat in the Human Rights Council. This is further evidence of their commitment to advancing human rights globally, thus building on the work of the Council to promote and protect all human rights universally without distinction of any kind. As President of the Human Rights Council, I warmly welcome the engagement of UN member States to contribute to the important work which lies ahead of us. As an observer of the Council, the U.S. has recently contributed constructively and positively to this work. Should the U.S. become a full-fledged member of the Council I am confident they would continue to provide valuable input in a spirit of partnership and cooperation”.
