New Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic presents credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations office at Geneva

Héctor Virgilio Alcántara, the new Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Alcántara had been serving as the Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Portugal since 2017. He was Ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2017. Mr. Alcántara served as Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to United Nations Headquarters from 2011 to 2014, a position he also held from 1990 to 1993. In 1993, he was concurrently Ambassador to Canada.

Mr. Alcántara served as the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States from 2008 to 2011. He served as Senior Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2008, and concurrently served as Adviser to the Minister of Finance. He was Consul General in the Republic of Korea from 1998 to 1999; Consul General in Japan from 1993 to 1994; Consul General in New Orleans, United States, from 1989 to 1990; and Consul General in New York, United States, from 1988 to 1989.

Mr. Alcántara was a Professor of Journalistic Writing Techniques in the Dominican Institute of Journalism from 1970 to 1975. He is the director and founder of four daily newspapers, has received several awards, and has written a number of books. He has a Bachelor of Art in Social Communication Sciences from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. He also carried out graduate studies on journalism at the Centre for Advanced Studies on Journalism for Latin America, Quito, Ecuador, and has a Diploma of Qualification for Diplomats of the Foreign Service from the Institute of Higher Education on Diplomatic and Consular Training.
