NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALDIVES PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

Hala Hameed, the new Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Hameed had been serving as Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives since October 2015 and as Additional Secretary at the Ministry from August to October 2015. She was the Minister of State for Law and Gender from July 2014 to August 2015 and the Minister of State for Health and Gender from December 2013 to July 2014, leading the Government’s gender policy and the Foreign Ministry’s work for the protection and promotion of the rights of children. She was Vice Chairperson of the Police Integrity Commission from November 2012 to December 2013, and a member of the Commission from 2009 to 2012. She was also a member of the Education Trust Fund from 2012 to 2014. From 2009 to 2011, she was a Research Supervisor at Maldives National University.

Ms. Hameed started her career in 1981, first at the Ministry of Planning and Development, and then at the President’s Office, where she served as Assistant Director from June 1994 to July 1996, and as Deputy Director of Development Affairs from July 1996 to May 2004. She was Director General and Head of the Environment Unit and the Acting Head of the Foreign Relations Department from May 2004 to July 2006, and Deputy Minister and Head of the Cabinet Division in the President’s Office from July 2006 to November 2008.

Ms. Hameed holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in gender and development from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. She was born on 6 November 1963 in Maldives and is married with three children.
