NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BANGLADESH PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Shameem Ahsan, the new Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Mr. Ahsan is a career diplomat with over 27 years of service. Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ahsan was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Brazil, a position he took up in September 2012. From 10 January 2009 to 20 September 2012 he was posted to Brunei Darussalam where he held the post of High Commissioner of Bangladesh. Prior to that was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Iran from December 2005 until December 2008, with concurrent accreditation to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.

Between 2003 and 2005 Mr. Ahsan served respectively as Chief of Protocol, Director General for Europe, and in the International Organizations and for the Americas and Pacific departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During his career Mr. Ahsan undertook several overseas postings, serving in various capacities at the Bangladesh missions in New York from 2000 to 2003, Kuala Lumpur from 1999 to 2000, Geneva from 1994 to 1996 and New Delhi from 1990 to 1994. First joining the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1986, Mr. Ahsan consequently served as Assistant Secretary in the United Nations department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1988 to December 1989, and as Director in the Foreign Secretary’s Office as well as the International Organizations department between 1996 and 1998.

Mr. Ahsan is a medical graduate of the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He is fluent in English, has written and spoken French and an understanding of Urdu and Hindi. Mr. Ahsan was born in Rajshahi, Bangladesh on 6 June 1959. He is married and has two sons.
