NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA
Mehmet Ferden Çarikçi, the new Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Çarikçi had held the position of Ambassador and Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of Turkey, a role he started in 2007, and was promoted to the position of senior advisor in 2010. Mr. Çarikçi was posted to Germany between the years 2003 and 2007, where he served as First Secretary and Counsellor at the Embassy of Turkey in Berlin.
Between the years 2001 and 2003 Mr. Çarikçi worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, holding the positions of Second Secretary, First Secretary, Deputy Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Cabinet to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. In 1999 Mr. Çarikçi undertook a tour of duty to Libya, where he worked at Turkey’s Embassy in Tripoli as both Second Secretary and Deputy Chief of Mission.
A career diplomat, Mr. Çarikçi was posted to New York between 1996 and 1999, where he served as Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations. Mr. Çarikçi joined the Diplomatic Service in 1993 as Desk Officer for Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, within the General Directorate for Middle East and Africa, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Çarikçi was born in Istanbul in 1968. He studied International Relations at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, followed by a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies and International Economics at the Johns Hopkins University, Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna, Italy and in Washington D.C. in the United States.
Mr. Çarikçi speaks English, German, Italian and French. He is married and has a child.
