NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF VIET NAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Nguyen Trung Thanh, the new Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Nguyen had been serving as Deputy Chairman of the State Commission for the Overseas Vietnamese at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam since October 2011. He was Ambassador of Viet Nam to Singapore from September 2007 to July 2011. From January 2003 to August 2007, Mr. Nguyen served as Assistant Minister, Member of the Ministerial Executive Board and Chief of the Foreign Ministry Board of Economic Diplomacy. During this period, he also served as Viet Nam’s Senior Official to the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), and the Forum for East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
A career diplomat, Mr. Nguyen joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam in 1981. He served as Attache at the Embassy of Viet Nam in Canberra, Australia from 1982 to 1985, and as Vice Ambassador at the Embassy of Viet Nam in London, United Kingdom from 1999 to 2002. He also served as Director General of the ASEAN Department at the Ministry in 2002, and as Deputy Director General of the Southeast Asia, South Asia and South Pacific Department, and of the ASEAN Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1998.
Mr. Nguyen has a Master of Art in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in cooperation with Harvard University (1991 to 1993) and a Bachelor of Art in Diplomacy from the Academy of Diplomacy of Viet Nam (1976 to 1981). He is married with two children.
