NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PORTUGAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

Graca Andresen Guimaraes, the new Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Andresen Guimaraes had been serving as Portugal’s Ambassador to Cape Verde since 2007. She served at the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union from May 1999 to February 2004.

A career diplomat, Ms. Andresen Guimaraes joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980. She has held different posts, including as Head of Division, Department of Sub-Saharan Africa at the Ministry from 1992 to 1995; at the Embassy of Portugal to the United Kingdom from 1984 to 1991; and as Diplomatic Advisor at the Cabinet of the Prime Minister from 1981 to 1983.

Ms. Andresen Guimaraes has received a number of decorations, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit; Cross of Commander of the Order “Pro Merito Militensi” of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta; Knight of the Order of Merit, Italy; Member of the Order of the Yugoslav Flag; Order of the Merit of Labour, silver, Hungary; and Knight of St. Gregory the Great, Holy See.

Ms. Andresen Guimaraes was born in Lisbon on 8 September 1948. She studied management at the Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences of the Technical University of Lisbon. She is married.
