NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JAPAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Yoichi Otabe, the new Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Otabe had been serving as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2009. His foreign posts include serving as Minister at the Embassy of Japan in France from 2003 to 2005; Minister at the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Korea from 1998 to 2001; Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in the United States from 1995 to 1997; First Secretary to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris from 1985 to 1988; and Attache at the Embassy of Japan in France from 1975 to 1977.

A career diplomat, Mr. Otabe joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1974. In addition to his foreign posts, he has held numerous positions at the Ministry, including as Director General at the Economic Affairs Bureau (2007 to 2009); and Director-General for African Affairs (2005 to 2007).

Mr. Otabe was born in Tokyo on 28 December 1950.
