NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AFGHANISTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Presentation of Credentials
Zalmai Aziz, the new Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Aziz had been serving as Afghanistan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation since 2007, also concurrently serving as Afghanistan’s non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Georgia, Belarus and Armenia. He has also served at the Afghanistan Mission to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
A career diplomat, Mr. Aziz‘s other notable positions include being Director of the United Nations Department at the Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has worked in a number of departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as Afghan Missions abroad since he joined the Ministry in 1966. He has also participated in many bilateral and multilateral negotiations and has headed Afghanistan’s delegations to many international conferences and meetings.
Born on 22 June 1939 in Kabul, Mr. Aziz studied international relations, graduating with honours.
