NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Yong Chanthalangsy, the new Permanent Representative of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Chanthalangsy had been serving, since 2003, as the Director General of the Press Department and Spokesman at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. During 2002, he was the Deputy General Director of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Department at the Foreign Ministry, and prior to that, staring in 1998, had been a Senior Officer with the ASEAN Secretariat, serving as Focal Point on Disaster Management in the ASEAN Regional Forum.

Before moving to ASEAN and then the Foreign Ministry, Mr. Chanthalangsy had a long career as a journalist. From 1977 to 1997, he worked for the Lao News Agency, rising to Deputy General Director, a post in which he served from 1992 to 1997.

Mr. Chanthalangsy was educated in Paris, where he studied journalism at the École Supérieure de Journalisme, receiving his diploma in journalism in 1977. He also studied at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in 1980/81.

Mr. Chanthalangsy was born on 22 January 1954 in Xieng Khouang Province in the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
