NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CONGO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Luc Joseph Okio, the new Permanent Representative of the Congo to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Okio had been serving at the Permanent Mission of the Congo to the United Nations in New York since 2000, first as Minister Councillor and then as Chargé d’affaires since October 2007. Concurrently, he has been head of the Congolese delegation to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations since January 2008; head of the Congolese delegation to the United Nations Security Council from October to December 2007; and member of the Congolese delegation to the Security Council in 2006 and 2007.

From 1994 to 1998, Mr. Okio served as Deputy Secretary-General and head of the Department of General Services at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in charge of the Francophonie. During his career, he has served in other capacities at the Ministry, as well as other Government bodies.

Mr. Okio has a number of graduate degrees from universities in the Congo and in France. He was born in 1949 in Ankari in the Congo. He is married with six children.
