NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Caroline Jane Millar, the new Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Millar had recently completed a short-term assignment as acting Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations in New York. Before that, she had been serving as the First Assistant Secretary of the International Organizations and Legal Division in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, a post she held from 2002 to 2005. She also served concurrently as Ambassador for People Smuggling Issues from 2003 to 2005.

A career diplomat, Ms. Millar’s overseas assignments include serving as Counsellor at the Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York from 1995 to 1998; First Secretary in Washington from 1988 to 1991; and Second Secretary in Hanoi from 1985 to 1987.

In Canberra, her posts have included being Assistant Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Executive, Planning and Evaluation Branch from 2000 to 2002; Assistant Secretary at the Trade Policy Issues and Industrials Branch; Director at the Management Strategy and Coordination Section; and Director at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Section.

Ms. Millar was educated at the University of Cambridge and holds a BA in history. She is married with a daughter.
