Les salutations protocolaires ayant été faites, permettez-moi de vous saluer, Excellences, Mesdames et Messieurs, chers amis, en vos noms et qualités respectives.

C'est avec très grand plaisir que je vous retrouve pour ce traditionnel brunch du premier août afin de célébrer ensemble la Fête nationale de la Confédération suisse, ses traditions et ses valeurs.

Cette journée anniversaire nous permet également de rappeler l’important rôle de la Suisse sur la scène internationale. En effet, la Constitution suisse a été rédigée juste après une guerre civile et, depuis plus de 100 ans maintenant, le pays œuvre quotidiennement en faveur de la paix, du droit international et du multilatéralisme. La Suisse et la Genève internationale restent, malgré le contexte géopolitique mondial, un lieu privilégié de dialogue et d’échanges en faveur de la paix et du développement. 

Cette voix qui porte haut les droits et la paix mondiale, et cet engagement constant pour un monde plus stable, prospère et durable sont à la fois des piliers de l’identité suisse, et des valeurs communes à l’Organisation des Nations Unies.

Ladies and gentlemen, 

Dear friends, 

In our daily work for a more peaceful and sustainable world, we are confronted with many challenges. Starting with the protection of human rights. Last year in Geneva we celebrated the 75^th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

Later this month, we will celebrate the 75^th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, in the presence of Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis. Universally ratified, the 1949 Geneva Conventions form the core of international humanitarian law. They remind us of the basic principles of humanity and respect for human dignity.

As pressures on the multilateral system and its pillars continue to grow everywhere, it is crucial to take some time to reflect on their relevance in today’s world. And what better place than Switzerland, as the depositary state of the Geneva Conventions, to do so. The country has been and continues to be a strong advocate for a world order based on international humanitarian law.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Switzerland for its leadership and commitment to multilateralism, which goes far beyond Geneva. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, our host country works daily to promote global peace and security and bring forward political solutions to various conflicts around the world. At the UN, we are also grateful for Switzerland’s endeavor to ensure a fairer, more democratic and more sustainable world.

Pour terminer, permettez-moi de remercier encore une fois la Suisse pour son soutien infaillible à la famille des Nations Unies à Genève et à la communauté internationale présente en Suisse. Je souhaite à tous les citoyens suisses une Joyeuse Fête nationale à l'occasion de ce 733^e anniversaire !
