HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL TO HOLD A SPECIAL SESSION ON THE DETERIORATING HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY ON 18 MAY

The Human Rights Council will hold a special session on “the deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem” on Friday, 18 May.

The special session is being convened following an official request submitted on 15 May by Palestine and the United Arab Emirates, on behalf of the Arab Group of States, which has been supported by 26 States thus far. It will start at 10 a.m. in Room XX of the Palais des Nations.

In order for a special session to be convened, the support of one-third of the 47 members of the Council – 16 or more - is required. This request was thus far supported by the following States members of the Council (17): Angola, Burundi, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela (the Bolivarian Republic of).

The request was also supported by the following observer States (9): Bahrain, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, Maldives, Oman, Tajikistan and Turkey.

The list of signatories remains open up to the holding of the special session. Therefore, the above list of States is to be considered provisional.

In connection with this special session, the Council will convene an organizational meeting on Thursday, 17 May, at 3 p.m., in Room XX, where specific details on the special session and its scenario will be announced. This meeting is also public.


This will be the twenty-eighth special session of the Council. The last special session addressed the situation in Myanmar on 5 December 2017.
