COMMITTEE ON THE ELIMINATION OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN CONCLUDES SIXTY-NINTH SESSION

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women concluded today its sixty-ninth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the implementation of the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in Chile, Fiji, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia and Suriname. The Committee also adopted General Recommendation N° 37 on gender-related dimensions of disaster risk reduction in the context of climate change.

Dalia Leinarte, Committee Chairperson, in her concluding remarks said that the Committee held dialogues with non-governmental organizations from countries under review, and thanked United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental bodies that had provided information to the Committee. During the session, the Committee adopted General Recommendation N° 37 on gender-related dimensions of disaster risk reduction in the context of climate change (CEDAW/C/GC/37), and initiated the drafting of a general recommendation on trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration. Another two general recommendations were in the pipeline, focusing on indigenous women and gender stereotypes, recalled the Chair.

Together with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, including its causes and consequences, and with the Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice, the Committee adopted a joint statement entitled "confronting sexual violence, demanding equality" on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Progress was made with regard to individual communications under the Optional Protocol to the Convention, as the Committee adopted four final decisions.

The Committee adopted the report of the sixty-ninth session.


The seventieth session of the Committee will be held from 2 to 20 July 2018 in Geneva, when the Committee will consider the reports of Australia, Cook Islands, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Mexico, New Zealand, State of Palestine and Turkmenistan.
