Media statement from the Office of the Special Envoy for Syria on the appointment of Yacoub El Hillo

Since August 2013, Yacoub El Hillo of Sudan has served as the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Syrian Arab Republic, based in Damascus.
On 27 June 2016, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Mr. El Hillo as his Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Mission in Liberia where he will also serve as the UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme.
After such commitment to the Syrian people in such a highly pressurized role, this move is at the appropriate time for rotation.
Yacoub El Hillo's years of tireless work in support of all Syrians in need, often undertaken under high pressure and at great risk, have saved countless lives. I thank him unreservedly for his outstanding accomplishments and courage.
