BAHRAIN JOINS THE CONVENTION ON CERTAIN CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS
On 11 March 2016, Bahrain joined the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) and its Protocol III on Incendiary Weapons, Protocol IV on Blinding Laser Weapons and Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War. Bahrain is now the 122nd State Party to the CCW.
Ambassador Tehmina Janjua of Pakistan, President-designate of the Convention’s Fifth Review Conference, welcomed Bahrain to the CCW. She added that Bahrain has demonstrated its commitment to international humanitarian law by joining the CCW, and hoped for the early universalization of the Convention.
The purpose of the Convention and its Protocols is to ban or restrict the use of specific types of weapons that are considered to cause unnecessary or unjustifiable suffering to combatants or to affect civilians indiscriminately. The Convention itself contains general provisions. All prohibitions or restrictions on the use of specific weapons or weapon systems are the object of the Protocols annexed to the Convention which strike a balance between military necessity and humanitarian concerns.
