NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SOUTH SUDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Mawien Makol Ariik, the new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ariik had been serving as the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan since 2011. He was an Assistant Professor at David Eccles School of Business, Department of Economics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah from 2009 to 2011, and also taught at the same University as a lecturer from 2004 to 2009, and as a teaching assistant from 2002 to 2004.

Mr. Ariik was the Secretary of External Relations for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Utah chapter from 2003 to 2005. He founded and was Chairman of the Makol Ariik Development Foundation in Utah from 2007 to 2011, and Chairman of the South Sudanese Community Association in Utah from 2001 to 2003.

Mr. Ariik has an LLB in Law from the University of Cairo in Egypt (1985-1989); a B.Sc. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Juba, South Sudan (1990-1994); a M.Sc. in International Economics from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah (2001-2003); and a PhD. in Political Economy from the University of Utah (2003-2006). He was born in 1962 in Lou-Ariik, Tonji State, and is married.
