NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SYRIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO OFFICER-IN-CHARGE OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Houssam El dine Alaa, the new Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Vladimir Gratchev, Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Alaa had been serving as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates for international organizations and European affairs since January 2013. He was Director of the international organizations department at the Ministry from July 2012 to January 2013. He served as Syria’s Ambassador to Spain from May 2010 to July 2012, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador of Syria to the Vatican from June 2011 to July 2012. He also represented Syria in many international and regional conferences.

Mr. Alaa served at the Permanent Mission of Syria to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2004 to 2006, and served at the Permanent Mission of Syria to United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1995 to 2004. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994.

Mr. Alaa has a B.A. in language and literature from Aleppo University (1990). He was born on 24 October 1966 and is married with three children.
