NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CYPRUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Andreas Ignatiou, the new Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment in Geneva, Mr. Ignatiou served as the Ambassador of Cyprus to Iran. From 2011 to 2012 he was Chargé d’Affaires at Cyprus’s Embassy in Romania. Previously he held the position of Head of the Schengen Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2006 to 2010 Mr. Ignatiou was the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Cyprus in Greece. He has carried out various duties for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the post of Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Cyprus in Bulgaria between 2003 and 2006. Prior to that he carried out a tour of duty in China, serving as Deputy Head of Mission, a post he held from 2002 to 2003. From 1997 to 2001 Mr. Ignatiou worked at the Embassy of Cyprus in Austria and the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Mr. Ignatiou began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1996, first working in the Political Division on Multilateral Affairs.

Mr. Ignatiou started his career in public service in 1992 as an Administrative Officer at the Ministry of Finance, before being reassigned to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, again as an Administrative Officer, from 1994 to 1996. He was born on 5 May 1964 in Nicosia. He has a Master’s Degree in Political Sciences from the University of Vienna, where he also studied the German language.
