NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SIERRA LEONE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Yvette Stevens, the new Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Stevens had been serving as Chargée d’Affairs at the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations Office at Geneva since September 2011. From September 2009 to September 2011, she was Energy Policy Adviser and Director for Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Sierra Leone.

Ms. Stevens worked within the United Nations system for most of her career. She served as a Senior Adviser at the United Nations Secretariat for Disaster Risk Reduction from July 2007 to July 2009. She was also the United Nations Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator and Director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva from September 2004 to August 2006. From May 2003 to September 2004, she was Director of the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa; and from November 1999 to April 2003 she was Special Coordinator of the Office of the Special Coordinator for Africa and the Least Developed Countries at the Department of Economic and Social Affairs at United Nations Headquarters in New York. From 1984 to 1999, Ms. Stevens held a number of different posts at the United Nations Refugee Agency, both in the field and at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva. She worked for the International Labour Organization from 1980 to 1984. From 1974 to 1980, she was a Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sierra Leone.

Ms. Stevens has a number of degrees, including a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the Moscow Energy and Power Engineering Institute (1966 to 1972) and a Master of Science in electrical machines and power systems from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London (1972 to 1974). She also has a number of publications.
