NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BULGARIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Presentation of Credentials

Ivan Piperkov, the new Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Piperkov was Deputy Head of the United Nations and Global Issues Directorate at the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he took up in 2008. Between 2005 and 2008 Mr. Piperkov served at the Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the United Nations in New York, first as Deputy Permanent Representative and then as Chargé d’Affaires. He served at the Permanent Misison of Bulgaria to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 1996 to 2000 as Counsellor.

A career diplomat, Mr. Piperkov held numerous posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, including as Head of Department and Minister Plenipotentiary for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and International Security Directorate from 2004 to 2005. From 2000 to 2003, he held the position of Head of Department and Counsellor of the International Security Directorate. He conducted a tour of duty to London from 1990 to 1991, where he was Second Secretary of the Embassy of Bulgaria to the United Kingdom. Between 1981 and 1990 he was posted to Kiev, Ukraine, where he held consecutive positions of Attaché, Third Secretary and Vice-Consul at the Consulate General. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978.

Mr. Piperkov holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, where he was a student between 1973 and 1978. In 1987 he took part in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria’s International Relations and Global Environment academic programme, and in 1995 he attended the United States’ qualification programme ‘United States-European Security Issues’ in New York.

Mr. Piperkov was born on 5 November 1952. He is married and has two daughters.
