NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JORDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Rajab M. Sukayri, the new Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Sukayri had been serving as Director of the Department of Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan since October 2010. He served as Ambassador of Jordan to Australia and Non-Resident Ambassador to New Zealand from August 2005 to August 2010. He was Director of the Foreign Minister’s Cabinet and Official Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan from August 2004 to August 2005. He served as Jordan’s Ambassador to China and Non-Resident Ambassador to Viet Nam and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from August 1999 to August 2004, during which time he was also Dean of the Arab Ambassadors and Chairman of the Arab Ambassadors Council in Beijing, China.

Mr. Sukayri served as Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan and part-time Lecturer at the Institute of Diplomacy in Jordan from 1996 to 1999. He served as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Permanent Mission of Jordan to the United Nations in New York from 1991 to 1996. From 1976 to 1991, Mr. Sukayri served as Third, Second and First Secretary at the Jordanian Embassies in Beirut, Kuwait and Ottawa with intervals at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan. From 1974 to 1976, Mr. Sukayri served as Attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan.

Mr. Sukayri has a degree in business administration from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan, a Master in political science from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and a Doctor of Diplomatic Studies from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. He is married with five children.
