NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ECUADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Luis Gallegos Chiriboga, the new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga had been serving as Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States since 2005. Before that, he was Ambassador of Ecuador to Australia and Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations in New York. From 2000 to 2002, he was Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador. From 1997 to 2000, he was Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
A career diplomat, Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga has also served as Ambassador of Ecuador to El Salvador (1994 to 1997); Coordinator of the Modernization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990 to 1994); and Head of Mission in Bulgaria (1985 to 1989).
He has held numerous posts within the United Nations, including as President of the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communications Technologies, President of the World Fund for International Rehabilitation, Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on a Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2002 to 2005); Vice President of the General Assembly (2003); Vice President of the Economic and Social Council (2005); Vice President of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund; Vice President of the Commission on Human Rights (1998); and President of the Geneva Diplomatic Corps Network.
Mr. Gallegos Chiriboga has a Bachelor of Political and Social Sciences; a Doctor of Law; a Qualification in Diplomacy from the Institute of Higher National Studies; and a Master of Arts from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, United States. He was born on 13 December, 1946 and is married with two kids.
