NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SPAIN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Agustín Santos Maraver, the new Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Santos Maraver served as the Director of the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 2008 to 2011. From 2004 to 2008, he was advisor to the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Mr. Santos Maraver also worked in Brussels, where from 2002 to 2004 he was the Coordinator of the Permanent Representatives Committee and from 1999 to 2002 he was the Coordinator in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union. From 1995 to 1999 he served as the Deputy Chief of the Spanish embassy in Canberra; from 1992 to 1995 he was an advisor in the international department of the cabinet of the Prime Minister; and from 1991 to 1992 he was the head of the technical office of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.

Mr. Santos Maraver began his diplomatic career in 1982 as Secretary of the Spanish embassy in Beijing, where he served until 1984 before becoming the Deputy Chief of the Spanish embassy in the People’s Democratic Republic of Laos, where he served until 1985. From 1985 until 1988 he was Secretary of the Spanish embassy in Havana, and from 1988 until 1991 he was the Secretary of the Spanish embassy in Washington, DC.

The new Permanent Representative of Spain is the recipient of many commendations and is an Officer of the Order of Civil Merit (1987), an Officer of the Order of Isabel the Catholic (1991), a Commander of the Order of Isabel the Catholic (2004), and Commander of the Order of Uissan Alauita of Morocco.

Mr. Santos Maraver was born on 21 September 1955 in Los Angeles and holds degrees in philosophy and literature and political science and sociology.
