NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHILE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Pedro Oyarce Yuraszeck, the new Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Oyarce had been serving as Chile’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States since 2006. He has already served at the Permanent Mission of Chile to the United Nations Office at Geneva, as Deputy Permanent Representative from 1997 to 2000; as Counselor from 1990 to 1993; and as a diplomatic member from 1975 to 1980. He also worked at the Permanent Mission of Chile to United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1983 to 1986. From 1987 to 1988, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile to the international organizations in Kenya. He was also posted at the Embassy of Chile in Colombia from 1988 to 1989; and at the Embassy of Chile in Spain from 1994 to 1997.

A career diplomat, Mr. Oyarce joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile in 1974, holding posts at the Department for Special Policies, Department for Maritime and Antarctic Affairs; Multilateral Policy Department, Head of Department for UN Agencies; and Deputy Head of the Multilateral Policy Department. He was Director of the Multilateral Policy Department and Coordinator of Chile for the UN Security Council from 2001 to 2006. He has also represented Chile to sessions of the Commission on Human Rights, the General Assembly and the UN Conference on the Law of the Sea.

Mr. Oyarce graduated with a degree in legal and social sciences from the University of Chile in 1973, and from the Diplomatic Academy of Chile in 1974. He was on a fellowship from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) on disarmament and international security in 1983.
