NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SENEGAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Babacar Carlos Mbaye, the new Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Mbaye has been serving as Senegal’s Ambassador to Turkey since 2006. From 2005 to 2006, he resumed a post he had already held, from 1985 to 1998, namely as Diplomatic Advisor to the Head of State of Senegal. From 2004 to 2005, he was a member of the Group of United Nations Observers to the Commission established between Cameroon and Nigeria to implement the judgement of the International Court of Justice on the territorial dispute between the two countries.

From 2000 to 2005, Mr. Mbaye worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the rank of Ambassador, where he supervised the work of young diplomats and ensured coordination in their training. From 1998 to 2000, he was General Secretary of Presidential Services, and from 1993 to 1998, he was Director of Cabinet of the Ministry of Services and Presidential Affairs, a post held cumulatively with that of Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Republic.

Between 1980 and 1983, Mr. Mbaye served at the Senegalese Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden; from 1983 to 1985 in Rabat, Morocco; and in 1985 he worked at the Senegalese Embassy in Belgium, Brussels. From 1977 to 1980, Mr. Mbaye was Head of Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Mbaye earned his Baccalaureate in 1971. He holds a Diploma in Public Law from the University of Dakar, as well as diplomas in Literary Studies in English from the same University. He has worked as a teacher at the National School of Administration and Magistrature, which has also given him a Diploma in Diplomacy.

Mr. Mbaye was born in 1952 in Kaolack, Senegal. He is married, and has two children. He speaks French, English, and basic Arabic.
