NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PERU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros, the new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Cuadros was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, prior to which, from 2001, he was Vice-Minister and Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs. From 2000 to 2001, he was Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States. He was also, from 1998 to 2000, both Deputy Permanent Representative of Peru to the World Trade Organisation and to the United Nations in Geneva. From August to November 1998, he was Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Peru.

In 1992, he was Director of the Peruvian Insitute for International Relations, during which time he was also Director of the Sovereignty Section and Director of Planning in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for which body he also served, from 1990 to 1991, as Director-General of Coordination. During the period from 1989 to 1990, he was Minister-Counsellor, Embassy of Peru in Ecuador, prior to which, from 1988 to 1989, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations in New York, having been, from 1986 to 1987, Counsellor, Chief of the Political Section in the Mission.

From 1984 to 1986, he held two subsequent posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director of Integration, and Director of Economic Affairs. From 1980 to 1984, he was Chief of the Political Section of the Embassy of Peru in France. From 1977 to 1979, he was Member of the Permanent Mission of Peru to the Latin American Free Trade Association, and in 1976, was the Chief of the Department of Non-Aligned Countries in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lima.

Mr. Cuadros has wide professional experience at the United Nations, and has been member of a large number of bodies within the Organization, including the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, from 2000 to 2004, and was Vice-President of that body from 2000 to 2001. He was also, from 2000 to 2002, member of the Working Group on Multinational Corporations and Human Rights, a sub-body of the Sub-Commission. He has participated as Delegate and Head of Mission in several international meetings and conferences.

Mr. Cuadros holds a Masters in International Law from the University of Paris V, and holds a license in International Relations from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru. He also holds and has held a wide number of teaching posts in Peru, El Salvador and France, mainly in international relations and related fields.

Mr. Cuadros has received a large number of awards, including the Order of the Sun of Peru, Grand Cross.

Mr. Cuadros was born in Cuzco, Peru, on 17 March 1949.
