Ambassador Al-Rahbi
Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is my pleasure to warmly welcome you to the opening of this remarkable exhibition of Omani photography and paintings, paying tribute to human rights. Through the work of local artists, this rich showcase gives us a powerful insight into the vibrant culture and tradition of Oman.

I would like to first thank the Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman for making this event possible. We are delighted to welcome you back to the UNOG Cultural Activities Programme for the first time since 2010 when we were treated, in this very space, to another spectacular exhibition of Omani culture. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Take-A-Breath Agency for their support. This exhibition helps to promote cultural awareness by means of a variety of artistic crafts, and is a fitting way to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Omani Society for Fine Arts. I congratulate them for their commitment to, and hard work in, promoting Omani culture and values, both locally and globally.

Here in Geneva, all of the work we do promotes peace, rights and well-being. These three core concepts underpin our striving towards a better future for all. However, achieving our objectives requires a collective commitment. Recognizing that we are united by our shared human experience is the first step towards greater awareness of and appreciation for diversity.

Photography and painting, as this exhibition testifies, are powerful art forms which transport us to other places, allowing us to view the human experience through a different lens. Transcending language barriers, these media have the unique ability to communicate strong messages and connect us with distant places and cultures.

This week, the Human Rights Council began its 28th Session here in Geneva. Over the next few weeks, the Council will tackle important issues which affect the lives of everyone on this planet. Although we still have a long way to go before all rights are universally recognized, this vision will become a reality much faster if we all work together. Awareness, understanding and interaction are what unites us and makes us stronger. With this in mind, we can move forward in unison, strengthening our responses and actions and pursuing concrete solutions which will ensure that every person, everywhere, has a brighter future.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition in this spirit.

Thank you very much.
