"Africa: Mother of all Peoples - A Celebration" on the occasion of the International Year for People of African Descent

C’est avec un réel plaisir que je participe ce jour à l’ouverture de cette exposition très spéciale organisée à l’occasion de l’Année internationale des personnes d’ascendance africaine qui s’achèvera en cette fin 2011. Je tiens tout particulièrement à remercier les Missions permanentes du Brésil, des États-Unis d’Amérique et du Rwanda, ainsi que l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie et le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l’homme, pour l’organisation de cet important événement qui sera suivi par un concert dans la Salle des Assemblées.

Dear Colleagues:
Throughout this year – and around the world – the United Nations, governments and civil society have been highlighting the economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights of people of African descent. We have been drawing world attention to the need to promote greater knowledge and respect for their diverse heritage and culture. And we have been striving for further commitment to eradicate racism and discrimination, as people of African descent are often affected by these scourges.

In September, we marked the 10^th anniversary of the Durban World Conference against Racism. People of African descent are acknowledged in the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action as a specific victim group who continue to suffer racial discrimination as the historic legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Until now we all face the challenge of providing Afro-descendants with access to the law, and to basic rights like education, health care, housing and employment.

The promotion and protection of human rights has been and continues to be one of the United Nations Secretary-General’s priorities. Here in Geneva, the world’s human rights capital, and across the globe, the United Nations family works together with Governments to help them promote and protect all human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Cette exposition met l’accent sur la participation des personnes d’origine africaine dans leurs sociétés et sur la contribution qu’elles ont apportée au monde, et ce, en dépit de tous les obstacles rencontrés. Apprécions et célébrons tous ensemble cette contribution. Puis engageons-nous une fois encore à lutter contre le racisme et la discrimination afin que les personnes d’origine africaine puissent pleinement jouir de leurs droits fondamentaux et de leurs libertés.
