DIRECTOR-GENERAL RECEIVES GIFT TO THE UNITED NATIONS FROM THE ASSOCIATION OF AFGHAN WAR HANDICAPPED

The President of the Paralympic Federation of Afghanistan, Haji Abdul Rahman Mohammadi, presented today to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Under-Secretary-General, Sergei A. Ordzhonikidze, a gift of the Association of Afghan War Handicapped to the United Nations. The gift is offered as a token of appreciation for the assistance that the United Nations has provided to the Afghan people.

The gift represents a carpet woven by hand over the course of six months by the Handicapped Workshop in Afghanistan. It depicts the UN logo and the Afghan flag and has a dedication to the United Nations from the disabled people of Afghanistan.

The Director-General thanked the President of the Paralympic Federation of Afghanistan for this very kind gesture and noted that the gift will be put on display at the United Nations Office at Geneva, so that it can be admired by all who visit and work at UNOG.

The Director-General assured Mr. Mohammadi and the Permanent Representative of Afghanistan, Ambassador Assad Omer, that the assistance which the United Nations is extending to Afghanistan will continue in all areas, including security, development, human rights, anti-drug efforts and others.
