DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG MEETS WITH PRESIDENT OF SIXTY-SECOND SESSION OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), met today with Dr. Srgjan Kerim, who was elected President of the sixty-second session of the General Assembly on 24 May 2007.

The Director-General congratulated Dr. Kerim on his election, and assured him of the full support of UNOG in the discharge of his responsibilities. The Director-General extended an invitation to the President-elect to visit UNOG during his tenure. Mr. Ordzhonikidze also highlighted the wide-ranging contributions of the United Nations family in Geneva, which have a direct impact on people’s lives across the world.

Mr. Ordzhonikidze and Dr. Kerim exchanged views on the challenges to be addressed at the sixty-second session of the General Assembly, including climate change, financing for development and the realization of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, counter-terrorism strategy and United Nations reform.

The Director-General and the President-elect discussed the issue of system-wide coherence, and agreed on the need for effective coordination at both national and international levels.

The sixty-second session of the General Assembly will start on 18 September 2007.
